Would You Drive a Hybrid F-150? (And Why You Should Consider it)

Of all the great Ford trucks for sale these days, one unique option that will soon be available is the 2021 Hybrid F-150. While there is a lot of information yet to be divulged on this exciting new hybrid offering from Ford, there is plenty that we already know. Some of the known and expected specs and metrics seem to position the Hybrid F-150 as a great buy. There will be a lot to consider when the new hybrid becomes available in the coming months, and it might be wise to start asking yourself, would you drive a hybrid F-150? To answer that question, and give some indication as to why you should consider it, here is the latest info on the 2021 Hybrid F-150.
Engine and Performance
By all accounts and according to Ford’s own website, the 2021 Hybrid F-150 is going to have a 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6 engine. While the exact numbers on the horsepower are yet to be officially declared, based on similar engines and hybrid vehicles like the 2020 Hybrid Explorer, it is expected that the 2021 Hybrid F-150 will be capable of generating around 450 hp. That should be plenty of power for an F-150, whether you need extra strength for the job site or on the weekend to haul your toys.
There are some other performance metrics that point to high output from the hybrid F-150 and make it a compelling choice. First, there is the fact that it is expected a full tank of gas (which will be around 30 gallons) will be able to go up to 700 miles. That is a lot of distance and is sure to make it feel like filling up at the tank is a rare event. Even if you travel north of 1000 miles a month, it means you would only have to head over to the gas station for a fill-up 1-2 times every four weeks.
This leads in nicely to the question of gas mileage. If, as speculated, the hybrid F-150 is set to have a gas tank that holds around 30 gallons and it will be able to go up to 700 miles on a tank, then we are looking at a fuel economy rating in the low 20’s. Some speculate that it could be up to 24 miles per gallon, depending on the actual size of the tank. Finally, although the 2021 Hybrid F-150 will be a full hybrid (a fact that makes it much improved over some of the competition’s mild-hybrid setups), it will not be a plug-in hybrid. While its 35 kW electric motor will assist the gas-powered engine, it will not be able to travel on battery power alone.

Towing and Electric Power
Another important performance metric truck buyers care about is towing capacity, and rightly so. Even if the all-new Hybrid F-150 generates plenty of horsepower, has decent gas mileage, and can run forever, if its towing capacity is weak, it will be a hard sell. The good news is that Ford is planning on making the Hybrid F-150 a true workhorse. While the numbers are yet to be officially announced, it could get as high as 12,000 lbs. Ford is committed to making their trucks powerhouses capable of hauling some serious machinery, so an impressive towing capacity isn’t really all that surprising.
Additionally, there is some interesting news about the Hybrid F-150 and the built-in generator that will come standard. A 2.4 kW generator will be found on every Hybrid F-150, but a 7.2 kW generator will also be available. These systems will come with 120V and 240V outlets, allowing you to power nearly anything. The implications for the job site will be huge with this much power at your fingertips. Theoretically, with a Ford Hybrid F-150, you would be able to literally run a small job site for a week or more on a single tank of gas.
Interior

The great news about the interior of the Hybrid F-150 is that we can readily guess with certainty that it will be the same great setup as all the other F-150’s that drivers have come to know and love. In fact, because the electric engine is tucked in neatly under the truck, it doesn’t interfere with the cabin at all. This means the same great, spacious ride will be possible on the 2021 Hybrid F-150 as on other F-150’s.
Additionally, the Hybrid F-150 will have a few new goodies in store that will transform the truck into an office on wheels. For starters, there is the SYNC 4 technology, which is one of the most advanced smart systems in any car or truck today. Next, the Hybrid F-150 will have an available 12” touchscreen as compared to the 8” screens that have become standard on a variety of makes and models. That kind of size will make a host of functions even easier to perform.
What’s more, the interior will feature a work surface so you can set up shop with your laptop and work from anywhere. And the max recline seats mean the Hybrid F-150 will be one of the most comfortable trucks on the market. Finally, the available rear locking under-seat storage will allow you to keep your possessions safe no matter where you park. When you add up all of these additional features, you begin to see that the 2021 Hybrid F-150 isn’t really just a truck. It’s a truck, an office, a power source, and more all in one.
Trims and Release Date
Ford has released six different trims for the 2021 F-150, starting with the base XL trim and going all the way up to the Platinum trim. But it is not yet clear if a hybrid option will be available on all of the trims or just a few. The price too is still a moving target though we can guess, based on other models, that it should start in the mid to upper $40,000 range. So far, there is also no official release date for the 2021 Hybrid F-150. But we are currently expecting it to reach us here in Cincinnati sometime this fall.
