In 1991, Ford enthusiasts had something new to talk about: the appearance of Ford’s latest vehicle, the Explorer. The model was an SUV, a newer type of vehicle that was starting to gain popularity, particularly among suburban families who needed something larger than a sedan to get around but didn’t want something too large. The 1991 Ford Explorer was one of the first sport utility vehicles on the market. Though there are plenty of others on the market today, the Ford Explorer remains a favorite due to the fact that Ford has continued to keep pace with what’s important to drivers and has upgraded the Explorer accordingly, especially when it comes to safety, tech, and performance.

The redesigned 2025 Ford Explorer marks the 35th anniversary of this model and promises to continue the successful line with upgrades to many of its features. This isn’t your parents' Ford Explorer––this one is all you, ready for future adventures and making memories with the ones you love. You’ll see some classic lines in its design, and there’s the classic Ford shape that pulls it all together, but there are also new features promising a futuristic experience every time you get behind the wheel. You’ll get the nostalgia you crave with all the benefits of modern tech and design. Interested in what has changed over the years for the Ford Explorer? Curious to see what’s new? Let’s take a look.

  • Safety & Assistance

Ford’s proprietary safety and assistance features are bundled together in the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite. While there are a few differences in optional features depending on the trim of the 2025 Explorer, Ford’s mission in providing this suite is simple: to help you drive confidently, knowing that if you miss something, your vehicle can and will account for it. Features included in the standard Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ suite include Evasive Steering Assist, Intersection Assist 2.0, and a Lane-Keeping System. You’ll also find your 2025 Explorer is equipped with a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking. In addition, you’ll have access to tools like Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Auto High-Beam Headlights.

    Blue-Cruise Hands-Free Driving

Ford’s hands-free highway driving software, BlueCruise, is a welcome addition to the convenience features, especially for drivers who travel highways often, whether you’re commuting to work or taking a road trip with the family. Instead of ending your trip with aching or stiff muscles and feeling like you missed some important landmarks, you can tap BlueCruise to take over when there’s a long stretch of highway in front of you. Consumer Reports even named BlueCruise the Top-Rated Active Driving Assistance System on the market today.

Wondering how many miles you can go with BlueCruise? Some 97% of controlled access highways in the United States and Canada are mapped for BlueCruise so that you can enjoy spending time with the people and pets accompanying you on the journey. If you happen to glance off to the side, don’t worry––your driver-facing camera will alert you to keep paying attention so that you don’t miss a thing.

  • Comfort & Design

There are a plethora of trim levels, packages, and upgrades for the 2025 Explorer. The Active Comfort Package adds many practical comfort features to the base trim, including a heated steering wheel, ActiveX seating upholstery, and LED fog lamps for those misty mornings and evenings. With the heated steering wheel, you can keep your hands warm while driving, leading to fewer chills and cramped muscles. Spills are much easier to clean with ActiveX material, which is also resistant to stains. You’ll spend less time cleaning out the Explorer and more time enjoying the drive. ActiveX is also tougher than leather and will continue to look great for a longer period of time. If you want luxury and practicality in one material, it’s time to upgrade to ActiveX.

    Tech and Entertainment Features

The 2025 Ford Explorer comes packed with tech and entertainment features designed to provide the ultimate experience no matter how short or long the drive is. There are eight USB ports throughout the cabin, including two USB ports for the third row, so everyone can charge their phones, tablets, and other handheld devices whenever they please. A top-of-the-line sound system from Bang & Olufsen is available, with 14 speakers installed throughout the cabin, allowing for a surround sound experience like no other. You can enjoy a concert performance, your favorite tunes, radio, audiobook, or podcast in crystal clear tones, even if the road outside is rough.

You’ll be able to see what’s playing clearly on the gigantic 13.2-inch LCD touchscreen infotainment center and switch between apps with ease. There are also three 12-volt power sockets, helpful for those who need to plug in their laptops, a fan, or a portable fridge to keep their drinks perfectly chilled. If you’re looking to live in the future, the 2025 Ford Explorer is it.

    The Ford Digital Experience

You’ll also find expanded assistance when it comes to voice commands as part of the all-new Ford Digital Experience. Even when parked, you can take advantage of the new Digital Experience and browse online, stream your favorite playlists, listen to your favorite podcasts, and use your favorite apps, all from your 2025 Ford Explorer. You can also personalize your Ford experience further by connecting to Google, Spotify, Amazon, and other online services so that you can stream Prime videos, look up directions, set the temperature inside the cabin, and more. The future has definitely arrived for the Ford Explorer and for you.

The 2025 Ford Explorer is designed with the future in mind while acknowledging the Explorers that have come before. You’ll feel a wave of nostalgia when you see it, noting the classic Ford outline, but you’ll be amazed at how aerodynamic and speedy it is. The design focus for this Explorer is grace, efficiency, and speed on the outside, with maximum comfort and tech on the inside. With plenty of standard and available features, you can customize the Explorer to your heart’s content until you have a highly personalized, perfectly suited vehicle that will take you almost anywhere you want to go.

  • Power & Capability

A white 2025 Ford Explorer is shown parked near a cabin.

There are two choices for the 2025 Explorer’s powertrain. A turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder engine comes standard, while a turbocharged 3.0L EcoBoost V6 is available with the Platinum and ST trims. The four-cylinder engine is rated at 300 hp, while the V6 is rated at 400 hp. Both come with a ten-speed automatic transmission, but you can choose between rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, though rear-wheel drive is standard. No matter which powertrain you decide on, the Explorer is a rugged SUV with enough raw power to handle just about anything, whether you’re more interested in camping, off-roading, or attending auctions on the weekend.

    Haul or Tow

The 2025 Ford Explorer can haul an impressive amount of passengers, pets, and cargo when required. Fold down the third row for additional cargo space, and you can fit several suitcases, duffel bags, backpacks, or grocery bags in the back. You can also take advantage of a push button access to the back seats, making entering and exiting simple and quick, with no shoving or pushing required. With plenty of seating and space for passengers’ knees and elbows, as well as space for all their school stuff, sports gear, or your camping and hiking equipment, tools, and other necessary items, you’ll never have to worry about not having enough space again.

Traveling with larger items is a cinch with the Explorer due to its powerful performance when it comes to towing. Whether you’re interested in camping, attending a special event, or towing equipment for a project, the Explorer is here to help. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,000 lbs. What can you tow with that amount? Campers, toy haulers, horse trailers, U-haul trailers, utility trailers, and more can be accommodated. Want to take your ATVs out for the weekend? You can do that with the Ford Explorer. Interested in taking a vacation in your camper with friends? Load up and take your group to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. It’s easy to do what you love when you have the Ford Explorer on hand to do the heavy lifting.
