If you have been waiting for a groundbreaking advancement to the classic Ford Mustang, your prayers are now being answered. Introducing the upcoming 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, the world’s first American-made, zero-emissions muscle SUV.

You read that right. This innovative model will have heads turning everywhere you go with its unique design and outstanding features. Rolling onto dealership lots by the end of 2020, you can reserve your Mustang Mach-E to ensure that you snag one of the first runs.

Available in five trim levels, you can find a model that’s perfect for your lifestyle. Unveiled at the 2019 LA Auto Show, this battery-powered utility vehicle was inspired by the classic Ford Mustang. Offering an impressive driving range, plenty of advanced features, and more power than other EV models, the Mustang Mach-E is set to hit the sweet spot with its reasonable price tag.

In an effort to combat the monotonous EV market, Ford designers and engineers began working on this project many years ago. Originally, they had an idea to produce an EV hatchback, but that was quickly scrapped for a more thrilling idea - an EV Mustang!

Let’s take a closer look at everything we know about the newest addition to Ford’s stable.

A Thoroughbred At Its Core - The Mustang Mach-E

Are you thinking that making an electric Mustang will cut the performance capabilities? Think again. Ford engineers made a point to ensure that the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E will lack nothing. Using AWD and a single, rear-mounted fully-electric motor, this beast will generate a targeted 332 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque.

Surprised? Well, hold on to your horses (pun intended) because the GT and GT Performance Edition version are estimated to produce a staggering 459 horsepower and a whopping 612 lb-ft of torque, though Ford has yet to confirm these numbers. As we mentioned before, no power was sacrificed for this beauty to be born.

Charged Up and Ready To Go - What About The Mach-E Battery?

Now let’s look at the battery. There are two different battery packs depending on which trim level you opt for. The first is a lithium-ion battery pack that contains 288 cells and offers 75.7 kWh. The second is the extended-range lithium-ion battery that provides 98.8 kWh and has 376 cells. Both battery packs come with an 8 year or 100,000 miles warranty. The extended-range battery will provide drivers with a targeted 300-mile driving range, which is very good for an EV.

    Instant Power

One of the key factors that made the Mustang such a popular vehicle was its ability to leave other cars in the dust. That doesn’t change with the new EV version. This pony can still run! In fact, the GT Performance Edition can accelerate from zero to 60 miles-per-hour in under 4 seconds. That’s an incredible sprint time. Even the non-GT models can go from zero to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds with the help of the extended-range battery. However, we have yet to see these perform in person, so they are subject to change like other details of the Mach-E.

Blurring the Line - Is the Mach-E Sports Car or SUV?

As for handling, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E uses a low center of gravity and perfectly balanced weight distribution of 50/50 to offer drivers a smooth experience around corners and sharp turns. Its overall length is measured at 186 inches, which is almost a foot shorter than its big brother - the Ford Explorer.

    Cargo Storage

First thing’s first. Let’s talk about the cargo area. As previously mentioned, the powertrain system is positioned in the back of the vehicle. That doesn’t mean that the back is incapable of functioning as a cargo area, though. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. With all five seats in use, the new Mustang offers 29 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear. By folding down the back row, you can gain access to almost 60 cu.ft. That’s incredibly impressive for an EV.

This innovative crossover offers a front trunk for stowing away extra items, as well. With five additional cu.ft. of storage space, this area is not carpeted. That means that you can store your carry-on luggage inside or use it to put dirty items from your weekend getaway. This petite space can be easily hosed out, and Ford is currently working on adding a foam insert that can keep ice for up to four days. This is ideal for folk who love to head off on adventures or tailgate at football games.

High Tech and Driver Centric Cabin

As for the cabin, there are several interior features that make this model extremely special. The first one is impossible to miss. It’s the infotainment interface. Displayed in the form of a giant 15.5-inch touchscreen monitor, the infotainment panel is said to be the most advanced system that Ford has come up with to-date. It has not been given its official name yet, but some have speculated that it will part of the Sync 4 tech family. This multi-media system is designed to learn all about your driving habits. Its intuitive nature makes it easier to interact with the vehicle and get your day going more efficiently. For example, the features you use most frequently will automatically pop up at the bottom of the screen for instant access.

    Safety Tech

There are also several driver confidence technology packages that may be available for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E. The system known as the Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0 adds advanced safety features such as BLIS with cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, reverse brake assist, a reverse sensing system, post-collision braking, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, a lane-keeping system, and a rearview camera. All of these operations work in unison to help prevent accidents on the road. Next is the suite of safety features known as the Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0. This package adds evasive steering assist, intelligent adaptive cruise control, and navigation. The most advanced package is the Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology suite. This includes active park assist 2.0 and a 360-degree camera system.

For entertainment purposes, the upcoming Mustang Mach-E has been fitted with a 10-speaker premium Bang & Olufsen sound system. Complete with a subwoofer for an optimized music-listening experience, this audio system offers a soundbar with surround sound, adaptive volume, and dynamic sound tuning. In other words, this stereo will give your studio-quality sound during your drive. If you are a music lover, this might be the main selling point!

Another highlighted feature for the cabin is the panoramic fixed glass roof. This is so much more than a sunroof. The glass features a special coating designed to keep the vehicle warmer during the winter months and cooler during the hot summer months. Taking comfort to the next level, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another comparable SUV with a feature like this.

  • Exterior

Cutting Edge Design - Ford Heritage Within Its Veins

Now you’re probably wondering about the exterior styling elements. Ford designers wanted to maintain parts of the classic Mustang while also adapting the design to suit an SUV body style better. The A-pillars were pushed back a bit, and the vehicle got a nose job. The front wheels were pulled forward, and the rear wheels have shifted a tad to the back. Keeping the iconic three-chamber taillight design, this model is easily still recognizable as a Mustang.

One thing that might seem strange at first glance is that the Mustang Mach-E does not have door handles. To open the doors, you need to push the door release button. They will open up about 4-inches, and you can then grab the hidden handle to open the door further. This design was incorporated into the vehicle for a more futuristic look and better aerodynamics. Combined with the E-Latch system, the Mustang Mach-E will recognize you as you approach the vehicle. An illuminated button will appear for you to press. This will open the door. It also recognizes when you walk away from the vehicle and conveniently locks itself.

Another nifty exterior feature is that you can use your phone as a key with the help of FordPass. This app can do everything from unlocking/locking your doors, opening the liftgate, activating the remote-start feature, and even locating the vehicle in a large parking lot. What’s more is that you can also open or close the windows using this advancement.

    2021 Mustang Mach-E Trim Levels

You can choose from five various trims, including First Edition, Select, Premium, California Route 1, and GT. These models are also available in seven exterior paint colors, including Shadow Black, Carbonized Gray, Iconic Silver, Space White, Star White Metallic Tri-Coat, Infinite Blue Metallic, and Rapid Red Metallic.
