Do you remember the muscle car era? It was a time of big block motors, candy-colored coupes, and abysmal gas mileage. The late 60s and early 70s saw all the major automobile manufacturers throwing their hats in the muscle car ring, and for good reason: Americans love big motors, speed, and off-the-line performance. Now Ford is betting big that this love affair with the muscle car still continues today, with the much-anticipated release of the Limited Edition 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1. Harkening back to its big motor days, the new Mach 1 won’t disappoint, with a 5.0-liter V8-fueled powertrain and retro good looks that are sure to turn heads and recapture the hearts of American car lovers everywhere.

Maybe the big motor was a given, but this fresh new take on the Mach 1 is anticipated to have the goods both inside and out. You can expect aggressive retro exterior lines and the best bits and parts borrowed from some of the other heavy hitters, including the Shelby GT500 and the BULLITT. Ford understands that history plays a big part in the Mach 1’s mystique, and they have played it up with signature features that resonate with misty-eyed muscle car fans. If you love American muscle, then you need to visit our Cincinnati dealership to see this beauty for yourself.

    Raw V8 Power

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is packed with power, starting with a massive 5.0-liter V8 engine that delivers a throttle-hungry 480 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. That is 20 hp more than the Mustang GT and the same output as the BULLITT. While it may not quite up to the level of the Shelby models, the Mach 1 certainly gives you performance a cut above that of the average Mustang. But the Mach 1 isn’t just a slightly more powerful car, it comes filled with cutting edge performance features designed to let you make full use of every single ounce of engine performance no matter the conditions. This ranges from aerodynamics, to cooling, to transmission options.

All that power comes with a standard six-speed manual transmission for an engaging drive experience, but Ford also offers a 10-speed automatic with paddle shifters for those who want to be even faster off the line. Since the BULLIT is manual-only, this means the Mach 1 is a great option for city drivers and drag racers. However, speed and convenience aren’t everything, and the manual even includes the same white ball shifter as the original BULLITT from the Steve McQueen movie of the same name. But whether you choose the old school manual or the modern paddle shifter automatic, those 480 horses and 420 lb-ft of torque provides impressive off-the-line speed, a necessary capability for a muscle car.

    Advanced Features

Designed to fit between the Mustang GT and Shelby models, the new Mach 1 will share components from both, including the Shelby’s subframe, intake manifold, and engine oil cooler, the last of which will increase the engine’s cooling capability by 50 percent. The automatic and paddle shifters come from the Mustang GT but have an upgraded torque converted and additional cooling. Ford also reports that the new exterior styling will improve aerodynamic efficiency.

The 2021 Mach 1 is available with an optional Handling Package, which is only available with the 6-speed manual transmission. The Handling Package includes a unique front splitter with more downforce, helps to increase grip and handling by channeling airflow more efficiently; new front-wheel lip moldings, which give the wheel wells a more dimensional appearance; and a low-gloss Magnetic swing spoiler with a Gurney flap for even more downforce. The Handling Package also includes rear tire spats borrowed from the Shelby GT500 to further enhance airflow and improve the car’s aerodynamics.

    A Muscular Presence

The styling for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 shouts aggressive, muscular performance. This is evident throughout the car’s exterior and interior. On the front end, the grille sports a 3-D mesh, shark-nose effect on the grille, which is something of a signature look for the Mustang. The grille also includes imitation round headlamps that reflect the headlights found on earlier Mustang Mach 1 generations. A large pony emblem sits proudly at the grille’s center, reminding us that this is the original pony car. The mirrors and spoiler are a matte-finish, which adds to its bold stance.

Ford offers the Mach 1 in several bold colors, including a unique Fighter Jet Gray that is exclusive to the Mach 1. Other colors include Iconic Silver, Shadow Black, Oxford White, Velocity Blue, Twister Orange, Race Red, and Grabber Yellow. These colors can be enhanced through the Appearance Package, which adorns the car with satin black side and hood stripes that are accented by red, white, or orange reflective stripes. But no matter what color it sports, the Mustang Mach 1 is going to attract attention.

    Interior Details

On the inside, we can expect a race car feel combined with all the best elements of the early Mustang Mach 1 models. The dash is equipped with an exclusive Dark Spindrift instrument panel with aluminum accents. The seats are specially made in Ebony and include a throwback accent stripe to the original Mach 1. But this Mach 1 is no antique and sports a 12.3-inch all-LCD instrument cluster. Finally, the infamous cue ball shifter will also be featured on the vehicle’s interior.

    Attention to Detail

The devil’s in the details with the exciting pre-release of the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1, and Ford shares a lot of them. Technically speaking, the 2021 Mach 1 was designed bumper-to-bumper for speed and performance. Each component was selected for its ability to deliver something better: better aerodynamic efficiency, speed, and handling. While the individual vehicle features that contribute to its impressive performance ratings may seem a bit mundane, this is truly a story of the Mach 1 being greater than the sum of its parts.

This attention to detail even extends to unseen features such as the Mach 1’s new underbelly pan. Extended 20 inches over the pan on the Mustang GT, this longer length increases and smooths airflow under the front of the car. The underbelly pan even contains features that increase downforce, creating more grip and allowing for better handling.

    Downforce and Tires

Downforce is also necessary when braking too, and Ford addresses this with special airfoils in the brake cooling ramps that also improve the brake cooling flow. This is a particularly significant improvement as it is critical to keep the brakes cool during performance driving. Overall, a base Mach 1 offers 22 percent more downforce than the GT. Upgrade your car with the Handling Package, and you will have an incredible 150 percent more downforce.

The Mach 1, when equipped with the Handling Package, comes with wide 19x10.5-inch front and 19x11-inch rear wheels that are painted an aggressive Tarnished Dark color. This is an upgrade over the 19x9.5-inch, and 19x10-inch five-spoke wheels found on the base Mach 1. Further, you get top of the line Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 track tires to help you get the most out of your car. With all of these speed-enhancing features, the Mach 1 is an incredible option for any driver who loves performance cars.
