Although electric cars have been making a big impression on the auto industry for quite some time now, all-electric trucks have been primarily out of the picture until now. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is the first electric pickup from Ford, and it is designed to deliver the incredible power and performance you expect from the F-150 name while running on an all-electric system. This is the truck a lot of us have been waiting for, and it has become increasingly clear that it was well worth the wait.

In terms of power and performance, the F-150 Lightning definitely comes through, with standard four-wheel drive thanks to a pair of motors delivering power to both axles. You have two options when it comes to the battery system: the Standard-Range battery setup or an Extended-Range option that boosts performance. While the Standard Range battery will save you money, the Extended-Range gives you greater horsepower and improved towing capacity. The extra weight does slightly diminish payload capacity for the F-150 Lightning, however, so keep that in mind.

As you would expect, the Ford F-150 Lightning has excellent range on a full charge, with the available Extended-Range battery increasing that by a pretty significant amount. In terms of other features, this EV pickup has next-level technology, including an Enhanced Pro Power Onboard system that gives you numerous outlets on the jobsite, as well as an Intelligent Backup Power system that lets you use the F-150 Lightning to provide power to your house in an emergency. Combine that with other great features like an available 15.5-inch infotainment display and Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving system, and you have a truly remarkable pickup. • Performance

When looking at any truck, one of the most important things to consider is the kind of performance and capability that it has to offer. This is true for conventional, internal-combustion-engine pickups, but it is just as true when looking at an exciting new EV model like the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. It might not have a conventional engine, but its battery and motors deliver fantastic performance that lets it handle a great deal of work.

    Horsepower and Torque

Every Ford F-150 Lightning comes with a dual-motor system standard, while some other electric trucks out there only have two motors as an option with a single motor standard. With one motor on each axle, the F-150 Lightning has four-wheel drive on every model, giving you optimal performance and a great driving experience. If you choose a standard model with the base battery pack, then you get 426 hp from the motors; the Extended-Range battery boosts this to 563 hp for even better performance. No matter which battery you choose, however, you get 775 lb-ft of torque for a responsive driving experience that delivers excellent acceleration and great towing capability.

    Towing and Payload

Speaking of towing capability, one of the main reasons a lot of people have been curious about the potential of electric trucks is to see what kind of real performance they would have to offer. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning comes through with fantastic real-world capability, though there is some tradeoff depending on the battery you choose. With the standard battery, you get up to 7,700 lbs of towing and 2,000 lbs of payload capacity, while the Extended-Range battery gives you 10,000 lbs of maximum towing and 1,800 lbs of payload. This kind of tradeoff is also seen with standard gas and diesel trucks, so this is no surprise and gives you plenty of muscle to handle anything you need it to.

  • Batteries

While most people are not too worried about great fuel economy with a full-size truck, since you typically focus on performance, it is definitely a consideration with an EV model. A lot of drivers have worried that the size and power of a truck would make for an impractical EV option that had to recharge all of the time. Fortunately, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning clearly proves that this is not the case, with impressive range and easy charging.

There are two battery options available for the F-150 Lightning, and while they impact other factors like horsepower and towing capability, they also have a big impact on your maximum range. The Standard-Range battery that comes as the starting option gives you up to an estimated 230 miles of range on a full charge. If you choose the available Extended-Range battery option, then this is increased to 300 miles of range from a full charge, which should be more than enough for the majority of tasks.

No matter which battery setup you choose, the Ford F-150 Lightning can easily charge at home through either a 120-volt or 240-volt outlet. The F-150 Lightning also supports DC Fast Charging from public charging stations, with the ability to charge from 15% to 80% battery capacity in just 44 minutes through DC Fast Charging. These options will make it easy to keep this EV pickup charged, whether that means plugging it in overnight or when you pause for a meal during a road trip.

  • Technology

On its own, an all-electric version of the F-150 would be enough to get a lot of people excited. Ford’s engineers have not rested on their laurels, however, and the F-150 Lightning is packed full of impressive new technology and features. For example, it has an Enhanced Pro Power Onboard setup that gives you numerous built-in electrical outlets that you can use to power other machines and devices. Depending on the trim, this can include 2.4-kilowatt and 9.6-kilowatt outlets, with plugs available in the cab, the bed, and even in the front trunk or “frunk” for extra connectivity.

    Power Your Home

One of the incredible new features of the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is the Intelligent Backup Power system. Normally, you plug in your F-150 Lightning at home in order to charge it. However, in an emergency where you have lost power at home, you can reverse this process and actually use the F-150 Lightning as a backup power source. This will let you draw enough power from your truck to fully power the average home for up to three days, or up to 10 days if you ration power for emergency needs only.

    Stay up to Date

The Ford F-150 Lightning also supports over-the-air software updates so that its systems stay up-to-date no matter what. This includes Ford’s all-new BlueCruise hands-free driving system, which is available for the F-150 Lightning and uses radar-sensing technologies to allow hands-free driving on compatible highways. At this time, more than 100,000 miles of roads in North America support BlueCruise, with additional highways being added.
