Looking for a new midsize SUV? Two of the most commonly compared vehicles in this class are the 2019 Ford Edge vs 2019 Nissan Murano. Both of these vehicles are popular among consumers and offer a high level of technology, efficiency, and safety technology, yet the Edge has a few advantages.

The 2019 Ford Edge is incredibly versatile, affordable, and powerful with all of the efficiency and technology that modern drivers are looking for. On its base model, the Edge offers an upscale cabin packed with high-quality materials and an advanced selection of standard and available entertainment features. Meanwhile, the Edge also offers one of the most powerful V6 engines in its class and offers above-average fuel efficiency.

The 2019 Nissan Murano is safe, advanced, and modern; however, it lacks cargo space and comfortable seating for its second-row passengers. The Murano is also disappointing in terms of performance, offering only one engine option which struggles at high speeds. However, the Murano does offer an incredibly generous suite of standard entertainment technology.

Overall, both the 2019 Ford Edge and 2019 Nissan Murano are excellent vehicles, but only one can be the right choice for you. To help you determine which of these vehicles best suits your lifestyle and budget, let’s take a closer look at how they compare.

  • Performance

A red 2019 Ford Edge, which wins when comparing the 2019 Ford Edge vs 2019 Nissan Murano, is driving towards tall buildings.

When it comes to the 2019 Ford Edge vs 2019 Nissan Murano in the category of performance, the Edge is the clear overall winner. It is more powerful, more fuel-efficient, and offers sportier handling. Drivers looking for a new midsize SUV with impressive performance specs will want to choose the 2019 Ford Edge over the 2019 Nissan Murano.

    2019 Ford Edge

The 2019 Ford Edge offers two engine options, including a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine and a twin-turbocharged 2.7L V6 engine. The 2.0L 4-cylinder engine is standard on every trim level with the exception of the ST trim and offers up to 250 hp with fuel economy ratings of up to 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The 2.7L V6 engine is much more powerful with the ability to produce up to 335 hp and 380 lb-ft torque. Despite its high level of power, the fuel economy ratings provided by this configuration are still fairly high and can earn up to 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. In terms of handling, the Edge is comfortable, smooth, and agile. This is further enhanced by the SUV’s upscale interior and high-quality seating, which helps make the Edge one of the most enjoyable midsize SUVs to drive.

    2019 Nissan Murano

The 2019 Nissan Murano disappoints in the category of performance, especially when stacked up against the 2019 Ford Edge. Standard on the Murano is a 3.5L V6 engine capable of producing up to 260 hp, and there’s no option to upgrade from there. This engine is powerful enough for everyday commutes, but won’t suit the needs of more adventurous drivers and can feel slow to accelerate on the highway.

The Murano’s standard engine is also paired with a CVT, which offers smooth shifting but can be quite noisy at higher speeds. In terms of fuel economy ratings, the Murano offers up to 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, which is less than what the Edge has to offer but is above average for the midsize SUV class.

Drivers and critics note that the new Murano lacks responsiveness when it comes to steering, which can make it difficult to maneuver. The Murano is also susceptible to significant leaning across tight corners but is fairly comfortable on the inside. Overall, the 2019 Nissan Murano is not a performance-based vehicle, but instead a vehicle better suited to daily commutes. If you’re looking for a more versatile vehicle that can handle any task with ease, you’ll want to opt for the 2019 Ford Edge.

  • Interior

The black interior of a 2019 Ford Edge is shown.

Both the 2019 Ford Edge and 2019 Nissan Murano offer an upscale interior packed with standard and available entertainment technology. However, the Edge offers significantly more cargo space, making for a more comfortable and spacious interior for its five-passenger capacity. Tech-savvy drivers will be pleased with either vehicle, but drivers looking for as much room as possible to store belongings will want to check out the Ford Edge.

    2019 Ford Edge

The interior of the 2019 Ford Edge is comfortable and quiet, thanks to its carefully designed cabin. In both rows of the Edge, the seating is comfortable and incredibly spacious, even for adults in the second row. In terms of cargo space, the Edge offers up to 73.4 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded and up to 39.2 cubic feet of space behind the second row of seating. These specs outperform many of the vehicles in the midsize SUV class, including the Nissan Murano. When it comes to standard technology, the Edge offers a USB port, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a WiFi hotspot. A 6-speaker sound system is also standard; however, a more impressive sound system is available as an optional feature.

The Edge’s most impressive available entertainment systems include an 8-inch touchscreen display, navigation, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, HD radio, a rear-seat entertainment suite with dual screens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The SYNC 3 infotainment system which comes onboard the Edge is top-rated and offers a responsiveness interface with easy-to-use controls. Physical buttons and knobs are also spread throughout the cabin, improving the system’s use, and they are smartly placed for both the driver and front passenger. Overall, the 2019 Ford Edge offers an interior built with comfort, technology, and space in mind, making for an excellent family vehicle.

    2019 Nissan Murano

The 2019 Nissan Murano offers a nice interior with upscale materials and excellent standard features; however, it is cramped and can feel less accommodating for second-row passengers. The total cargo space of the Murano is 74.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down or 32.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats. While the entire amount of space is a little more than is offered on the Edge, second-row passengers lose two cubic feet in hip and legroom.

The seating is made from cloth upholstery and is well-cushioned, but several cheap plastics are utilized throughout the cabin. Premium trim levels offer a more upscale interior on the Murano, but this will add substantial cost to your vehicle. However, this midsize SUV does offers a great selection of standard entertainment technology, including Bluetooth, multiple USB ports, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 6-speaker sound system. Meanwhile, available entertainment features on the Murano include navigation and HD radio. Satellite radio is also available on the Murano; however, this feature is offered as standard on the Edge. Drivers can also opt for an 11-speaker Bose premium sound system but may prefer the 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen system available on the Edge.

When it comes to the Edge vs Murano in terms of interior quality, both vehicles have a lot to offer. Sadly for the Murano, the Edge offers more space for its passengers and more comfortable seating paired with a higher-quality cabin.

  • Safety

If you’re looking for a safe midsize SUV, you’ll appreciate what the 2019 Ford Edge and 2019 Nissan Murano have to offer. Both vehicles provide a long list of standard and available safety technology, including some of the latest driver assist features. However, the 2019 Ford Edge has more top safety scores to boast.

    2019 Ford Edge

The IIHS awarded the 2019 Ford Edge a perfect score of ‘Good’ in all six crash tests that were performed. The Edge also earned a rating of ‘Superior’ when it came to the testing of its front crash prevention technology with the IIHS. This is in part due to the Edge’s long list of standard features that are offered through the vehicle’s Co-Pilot 360 system. These features come at no additional cost on the base model and include a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, automatic high beams, and pedestrian detection. Drivers can also opt for additional driver assist features which are available at a reasonable cost and include parallel park assist, front and rear parking sensors, lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and adaptive headlights.

    2019 Nissan Murano

The 2019 Nissan Murano earned a 4 out of 5-star rollover rating from the NHTSA, and also offers a nice suite of standard safety technology. Drivers investing in the base model of this SUV can enjoy standard features including a rearview camera, automatic emergency braking, a rearview camera, and forward collision warning. While these are a nice set of standard features, the Edge does offer quite a bit more. However, drivers can always upgrade to more options including blind spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, pedestrian detection, high beam assist, lane departure warning, and rear cross traffic alert. Many of these features are only available among the Murano’s highest trim levels, so you’ll be adding quite a bit more to its starting MSRP with these upgrades. Drivers looking to enjoy as many standard safety features as possible for a low price will want to opt for the Edge instead of the Murano.
