With so many different midsize SUVs on the market, it can be hard to figure out which one is right for you. One of the best ways to narrow down your options and determine what model has everything you need is to take two different models and compare them directly, so you can see the strengths and weaknesses of each. For example, if you look at the 2019 Ford Edge vs. 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, then you can see how they stack up against each other.
The 2019 Ford Edge, for example, has far more powerful engines standard and available than the Santa Fe. While you might not look at engine power as the most important thing when judging a midsize SUV, a more powerful engine makes the Edge a lot more fun to drive. On the inside of these two vehicles, you find a lot of similar features and options, though it is worth pointing out that the Ford Edge gives you more cargo and passenger space and has some superior tech and comfort options.
To be fair to these two SUVs, the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe does start off at a lower price, which can be important. The difference in power, driver enjoyment, and other features when you stack them up against each other, however, more than makes up for this difference in price. One thing to be said for both of these models is that they offer terrific safety features to protect you and your loved ones. Still, the 2019 Ford Edge offers you more overall, so you should consider your options carefully.
Engine power and overall performance with a midsize SUV really does matter, even if it is not to such a degree as with something like a sports car or heavy-duty truck. Still, you want your SUV to feel good when you drive it, to have the muscle to push up a hill, and quickly respond when you accelerate. That largely comes down to how powerful the engine is, and there is a significant difference between these two SUVs in this department.
The 2019 Ford Edge is designed with an eye toward offering the best performance possible, especially the ST trim level. The starting engine is still impressive, however, as it is a 2.0L EcoBoost engine that delivers up to 250hp and 280 lb.-ft. of torque. For most drivers, that will probably be enough power, but if you want a superior level of performance, then consider the ST. It comes with a 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine that offers up to 335hp and 380 lb.-ft. of torque for truly exceptional performance.
There are also two engines available with the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, depending on trim level much like the Edge. The standard engine is a 2.4L 4-cylinder offering that gives you up to 185hp and 178 lb.-ft. of torque. When you compare that to the starting engine in the Ford Edge, you can see the Ford SUV has a lot more power under the hood. The available 2.0L Turbo engine from Hyundai helps a bit, offering up to 235hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, but it is still under what the standard Ford engine provides. Nothing the Hyundai has to offer comes close to the power and performance of the road-dominating engine in the 2019 Ford Edge.
Fuel efficiency is certainly an important consideration when choosing a midsize SUV, since they have historically been quite inefficient. Fortunately, modern SUVs offer much better gas mileage, and both of these models demonstrate these improvements. Keep in mind that fuel economy changes depending on if you choose a FWD or AWD model, and the engine you prefer.
With the 2019 Ford Edge, you get excellent gas mileage, particularly with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine with FWD, which gives you an estimated 22mpg in the city and 29mpg on the highway. The same engine with AWD gives you 21mpg and 28mpg by comparison, which is quite fantastic. If you go with the more powerful 2.7L EcoBoost engine, then you can only have it with AWD and an estimated 19mpg in the city and 26mpg on the highway.
By comparison, the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe has very similar gas mileage, but falls short in a few ways. The standard engine with the Santa Fe offers up to an estimated 22mpg in the city and 29mpg on the highway – the same as the Edge. If you choose that engine with AWD, however, then that becomes 21mpg and 27mpg, slightly lower than the Edge’s estimated highway mileage with AWD. The more powerful engine with the Santa Fe with AWD, similar to the high-end configuration of the Edge, offers up to 19mpg in the city and 24mpg on the highway. Once again, it falls short of what the Edge gives you – and remember, the Edge’s engines are far more powerful.
A lot of people we talk to are interested in an SUV for the superior cargo space they provide. You can get four people comfortably into a sedan, or pile up a lot of cargo in the back of a pickup truck – but an SUV gives you both functions. As such, even with a midsize SUV, you should pay attention to how much interior space you get.
With the 2019 Ford Edge, you get nearly 114 cu. ft. of space for passengers, assuming you are not loaded to the brim with cargo. Even with four or five people inside, the Edge still offers nearly 40 cu. ft. of interior space behind the rear seats. And if you have only one passenger with you, then you get more than 73 cu. ft. of space to use behind the front seats.
By comparison, the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe offers just over 110 cu. ft. of room for passengers in total, which is quite a bit less than the Edge. If you have passengers in the front and back, then you get just over 35 cu. ft. of space behind the rear seats. With only one passenger, the offering from Hyundai tops out at just over 71 cu. ft. of space behind the front row of seats. In each category, there is less room to take advantage of in the Hyundai compared to the 2019 Ford Edge.
The insides of the 2019 Ford Edge and the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe are quite comparable in a lot of ways, though Ford edges the Santa Fe out in a few areas. For one thing, the nicest seats offered for the driver in the Santa Fe is an 8-way power adjustable option, and the front passenger seat is also 8-way power adjustable at the highest trim levels. By comparison, the 2019 Ford Edge has 10-way power adjustable front-row seats available, so you and your front-row passenger can get more comfortable in the Edge.
Both the Edge and the Santa Fe have available 12-speaker sound systems, though the Bang & Olufsen speakers in the Edge are arguably superior. The app support and functionality of the 2019 Ford Edge are particularly impressive, giving you a lot of control over your vehicle through your phone or other device. The inside of the Santa Fe is fine, but the 2019 Ford Edge simply offers more luxury and functionality.
