2000 Ford F-150: Born to Be Wild

Ford entered the new millennium with the tenth generation of the Ford F-150. This showed Ford was making a conscious effort to expand the market for their full-size truck, targeting family drivers and those using Ford trucks for work. The result was a lighter chassis with a more aerodynamic design than older models. It also replaced the twin I-beam front design with a more modern torsion bar suspension. This gave the tenth-generation F-150 a smoother ride designed to appeal to drivers new to trucking.

The two models to look out for in the 2000 Ford F-150 are the Harley-Davidson Edition and the SVT Lightning. The Harley-Davidson Edition sports exclusive exterior features like special badging and monochromatic black trim. Ford would produce this model until 2011, with the 2008 version featuring leather seats made from the same material as Harley-Davidson’s famous motorcycle jackets. The 2000 F-150 SVT Lightning was the second year for this model, and where the Harley-Davidson was built for looks, this truck was built for speed. The SVT Lightning can go from zero to sixty in just 5.2 seconds, with a top speed of 142 mph.

2004 Ford F-150: Rounding Out

The move towards a more family-friendly truck continued with the eleventh generation of the F-150, introduced for the 2004 model year. This redesign gave the F-150 a more stately design with a fully boxed-in frame to make the truck safer. In addition, Ford took steps to smooth out the F-150’s ride, including mounting the rear shock absorbers outside of the frame to reduce bouncing on bumps and potholes. Ford also changed the 4X4 system on F-150 models with four-wheel drive, allowing them to switch to rear-wheel drive on highway conditions to reduce fuel consumption.

The 2004 F-150 also introduced the FX4 Off-Road as its own model after having been a special package. This included a whole host of features for off-roading enthusiasts. The eleventh generation of the F-150 Regular Cab models is also unique as these had four doors, despite having only one row of seats. The rear doors opened to grant access to storage space behind the truck’s bench seat.

2009 Ford F-150: Rugged Looks

Ford decided to take a different design approach with the twelfth-generation F-150, giving it a rugged look similar to its popular Super Duty lineup of heavy-duty trucks. This was in line with the “Built Ford Tough” slogan, meant to convey strength. The front end of the 2009 model was given a three-bar grille with a Ford blue oval logo in the middle.

The 2009 F-150 introduced the world to the Platinum model, a top-of-the-line trim designed to give drivers all of the comfort and convenience features they might desire in a full-size truck. This includes heated and ventilated leather seats. Joining the Platinum in 2010 was the SVT Raptor, Ford’s second attempt at a performance truck. However, unlike the earlier SVT Lightning, the Raptor was designed for off-roading. The suspension has been given a lift and features Fox Shox Racing dampers for improved performance.

Speaking of performance, the 2011 F-150 was the first to get the option of the 3.4L EcoBoost V6. This utilizes twin turbochargers to give the F-150 some serious acceleration. The EcoBoost engine would become an available feature for years to come.

2015 Ford F-150: Even Lighter

The thirteenth generation of the Ford F-150 came with an improvement that was not visible to the naked eye. It wasn’t something you could look for on the truck. Unless you had a weigh station scale, you’d have no idea that the 2015 F-150 had lost almost 750 lbs from the prior year. This was not the result of the truck going on a diet. No, it was the result of a change from using steel for every body panel on the truck to aluminum. This metal is lighter but just as strong and durable as steel. This was important, as it made the F-150 more fuel-efficient across all trim levels.

The changes didn’t stop there. The 2015 F-150 was the first truck to have adaptive cruise control. This feature adjusts your following speed when using cruise control to match that of the vehicle in front of you. While it will never exceed the preset speed, it will decelerate to match traffic conditions.

2018 Ford F-150: Safety First

As the Ford F-150 became more popular with family drivers, the demand for more standard safety and driver assistance features increased. The result is the 2018 Ford F-150, with standard Ford Co-Pilot360 driver assistance technology such as adaptive cruise control and pre-collision assist with pedestrian assist. This feature alerts you to a possible front-end collision with another vehicle or a pedestrian and applies the automatic emergency brakes to bring your F-150 to a stop. This will either help you avoid a collision or reduce its impact. The 2018 F-150 was also the second year of the ten-speed automatic transmission added for the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine. The result is a powertrain that delivers a combined 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque while limiting fuel consumption to an impressive 25 MPG in city driving with rear-wheel drive models.

Ford also gave the 2021 F-150 an array of standard driver assistance features as part of the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite. The 2021 F-150 is just as dedicated to connectivity, with the latest version of the Ford SYNC infotainment system featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; these will help you and your passengers stay connected even if you don’t have charging cables to physically connect to the system.

The 2021 F-150 also became the first to offer the new Tremor model. This is built for fun off-roading, with a locking rear differential, an available Torsen limited-slip front differential, and other features that make this truck off-road ready right off the lot.
