Used Ford Escapes: Exploring the 2nd and 3rd Generations

If you have been thinking about purchasing a used Ford Escape, our experts here at Kings Ford highly recommend looking at the 2nd and 3rd generations. The second generation spanned from 2008 to 2012 and offered a variety of options, including a hybrid. In fact, this Escape Hybrid is the primary reason we suggest keeping an eye out for the 2nd generation.
On the other hand, the 3rd generation started in 2013 and continues to the current day. As far as used models go, you will not find hybrids on the market from this generation. However, due to outstanding performance and advanced technology, we could not help but suggest the 3rd generation too. So let’s take a closer look at the 2nd generation Escape Hybrid and the 3rd generation Escape models to give you a better understanding of why you should be looking out for them.
Hybrid From the 2nd Generation

In production for only four years, the Escape Hybrid is a rare find on used dealership lots. Like a diamond in the rough, if you see one, grab it. This model uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine mated with two battery-powered electric motors. Equipped with FWD and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), this particular hybrid has a stellar fuel economy set at 32 MPG combined (34 city/31 highway). It may also be equipped with AWD, which adds a third electric motor to the mix. This helps with acceleration and traction; however, it also drops the fuel economy down to 28 MPG combined (29 city/27 highway).
Available in two trim levels, the 2009 Escape Hybrid base model rides on 16-inch alloy wheels. It also includes a power-adjustable driver’s seat, cruise control, full power accessories, and dual-zone climate control. Other standard features are a CD player with MP3 compatibility and a four-speaker stereo.
Meanwhile, the Limited trim adds chrome exterior accents, rear park assist, and keypad entry. It also gets an upgraded infotainment interface known as Sync. This adds voice commands and an optional navigation system. Heated leather seats are included as well as a sunroof and a 6-disc CD changer. Chrome and piano black accent the cabin, and ambient lighting allows you to set a relaxing mood.
The 2010 Escape Hybrids have undergone a few changes. Blind-spot mirrors have been integrated into the side mirrors, and an electrically-driven air conditioning system has been installed. You might also find a used 2010 Escape Hybrid with a rearview camera or an automatic parallel parking system. Everything else carries over from the 2009 version.
As for the 2011 models, not many changes have been made. The main highlights to look for are the Leather Package and HD radio compatibility. Included in the Leather Package are heated front seats and, of course, leather upholstery. You should also note that the MyKey system is standard on both trims for this model year.
Finally, the 2012 Escape Hybrids are the same as the 2011 models. Since no changes have been made this final production run, we recommend the 2011 used Ford Escape Hybrid. It’s our favorite because you can get all of the newest features at a lower price.
3rd Generation Used Ford Escapes

Completely redesigned, the 3rd-generation of Ford Escape models is our favorite if you are not looking for a hybrid. The Escape Hybrid has been eliminated from this production run. It does return for the 2020 model year, but you will not find many of these on the used market yet. That said, though, you can find used Ford Escapes from the 3rd generation in four trim levels and with features to meet any need.
Starting with 2013 models, the base trim, the S, rolls on 17-inch steel wheels and features full power accessories, MyKey technology, air conditioning, and cruise control. It also includes a 6-disc CD changer and an auxiliary jack. Next, the SE adds alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, and keypad entry. It also comes with the Sync infotainment interface, satellite radio, and steering-wheel-mounted controls.
Stepping up to the SEL will get you heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, heated leather seats, a nine-speaker stereo system, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Lastly, the top-tier Titanium model comes with 19-inch wheels, remote start technology, keyless ignition/entry, and a Sony stereo. You might also be able to find one that has a panoramic sunroof and navigation system.
If you find a 2014 used Ford Escape, you may only notice a few minor differences. The SEL trim has been eliminated, and the rearview camera and Sync infotainment system are both standard.
The 2015 used Ford Escape models are where the technology begins to pick up a bit. Bluetooth phone/audio connectivity is standard on all trim levels, and a 110-volt power outlet has been added to the Titanium trim. On this top-tier model, you will also find a hands-free liftgate that makes loading the back much easier. You don’t have to put your groceries on the ground.
Looking at the 2016 lineup of used Ford Escape models, you will recognize a significant change as soon as you slip behind the wheel. The MyFord Touch and Sync infotainment systems have been replaced by the coveted Sync 3 interface. It comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, USB ports, and a nine-speaker sound system. Roof rails have also been added to this package for extra storage space.
If you want a base model that comes with the Sync 3 infotainment system, then a 2017 used Ford Escape would be your best bet. AppLink smartphone integration is also standard for syncing your phone while driving. The SE gets steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for a sportier feel, and several packages may also be found on the SE and Titanium models, including the Cold Weather Package, the SE Technology Package, the SE Leather Comfort Package, the Titanium Technology Package, and the Sport Appearance Package.
Newer used Ford Escape models, like the 2018 and 2019 versions, usually have higher price tags. However, that also means that they have more advanced technology. Apple CarPlay and Android audio are standard from the SE trim and up. The SEL model has made a comeback, and it includes leather upholstery, rear parking sensors, heated/power-adjustable side mirrors, and a power liftgate. If you want a modern, like-new vehicle, one of these newer options will be the best for you.
