Choosing the Right Ford F-150: Here Are the Trims

For more than 40 years, the Ford F-150 has been the most popular truck in America. That’s an incredible legacy to be a part of and a remarkable fraternity to join when you buy one of these pickups. That’s not a record that a truck can just stumble into or maintain, and it’s clear that Ford works hard to ensure they continue to offer the best trucks on the road. In large part, this is why you have so many fantastic options when looking at the F-150, and as your Ford F-150 dealer, we know everything about this legendary truck.

With the 2022 model year, you have eight different Ford F-150 models available, which can make it difficult to find exactly the right one with everything you’ve been looking for. While we’re always happy to talk to customers and help you find just what you need, we also know that many people like to do some research before coming to visit us. To help with this, we’ve put together this simple 2022 Ford F-150 buyer’s guide that should answer some of your questions and point you in the right direction to find the truck that will best meet your needs. To keep things simple, let’s take a look at each of the eight different F-150 models available:

The Ford F-150 XL

This is the starting trim for the 2022 F-150, which makes it a great place to see all of the standard features that you can get before going up to the higher trims and their options. For starters, the XL is powered by a 3.3L V6 engine that delivers 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque for an excellent standard performance and a great driving experience. This comes paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission, offering smooth acceleration that feels powerful while also being great at low speeds. Four other engines are available for the XL, but we will go into them down below with the trims where you get them as standard.

With the F-150 XL, you get 17-inch wheels and all-season tires, with larger wheels and tires available. Numerous configurations are offered, including a standard Regular Cab, a larger Super Cab, or a spacious Super Crew Cab. Each can come with a 5.5-foot, 6.5-foot, or 8.0-foot bed behind it. Inside the XL, you get vinyl flooring and cloth seating, with an eight-inch infotainment display, standard single-zone air conditioning, and a four-inch productivity screen for the driver.

The Ford F-150 XLT

Moving up to the XLT trim, you get many of the same features as the XL but with some improvements and greater options for available upgrades. For example, the XLT has the same standard 3.3L V6 engine, transmission, and 17-inch wheels, though it’s worth noting that the XL has standard black bumpers, while the XLT features body-color bumpers and a black grille with chrome surround for a nice overall look.

Inside the XLT, you’ll find carpeting with carpeted floor mats, along with a black urethane steering wheel, but a black leather-wrapped steering wheel is available. Many of the tech features are the same here as the XL, including cruise control and advanced safety features like Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking. You get cloth seating with the XLT that includes manual adjustability and lumbar support, but available upgrades include power seating and heated front seats.

The Ford F-150 Lariat

With the Lariat, we find a wide range of improvements to the F-150, starting with a 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine that comes standard on it. This engine delivers 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque for enhanced performance, though more engines are also available if you want even greater capability. The Lariat comes with 18-inch wheels wrapped in all-season tires, and it has chrome front and rear bumpers, along with a chrome grille and black surround.

Inside the Lariat, you’ll find carpeted flooring and floor mats, with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and dual-zone automatic temperature control, all standard. It also includes a 12-inch digital productivity screen for the driver, ambient lighting, and an Intelligent Access system with the key fob that includes a push-button start. You get a 12-inch infotainment display in the Lariat and leather-trimmed power-adjustable seating. A premium B&O sound system is available but not standard on this one.

The Ford F-150 King Ranch

The King Ranch takes power and luxury even further, starting with a standard 5.0L V8 engine that delivers 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. This beauty allows for a best-in-class payload of up to 3,325 lbs, giving you a ton of capability if you like to load up your truck with a lot of weight. You get accent-color bumpers with a Stone Gray grille and chrome surround, though chrome bumpers are available if you prefer them.

Inside is a carpeted floor with exclusive King Ranch floor mats, along with a Mesa leather-wrapped steering wheel and genuine wood accents throughout the interior. It features the same large screens as the Lariat but comes with a stunning Bang & Olufsen sound system for you to enjoy while on the road. This is one of our favorite all-around picks for drivers who want a lot of great features but who don’t need one of the highest trims.

The Ford F-150 Platinum

The Platinum builds on the King Ranch in numerous ways but includes the same 5.0L V8 engine standard, though it has 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, body-color front and rear bumpers, and a chrome grille with satin-chrome touches and accents. Inside, you’ll find similar features as the Ki

ng Ranch, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel and wood accents. The Platinum comes with Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0, which includes advanced safety features like Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go, Lane Centering, and Speed Sign Recognition, along with Evasive Steering Assist to help you avoid potential collisions.

The Ford F-150 Limited

Unless you’re looking for an off-road-focused pickup, the Limited is the pinnacle of F-150 engineering and design. With the Limited, you get an incredible 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine that delivers 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, which allows for best-in-class towing of up to 14,000 lbs with the right configuration. If towing is one of your main concerns, this is the engine for you. There is also a 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6 engine available, with 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque for incredible performance and a great overall feel.

A twin-panel moonroof comes standard on the Limited, along with 22-inch wheels and body-color bumpers with chrome details across the exterior. Inside the Limited, you’ll find an Admiral Blue leather-wrapped steering wheel along with all of the advanced safety features of the Platinum. The Limited comes with an 18-speaker B&O Sound System Unleashed for an incredible audio experience, along with leather seating, a wireless charging pad, and much more.

The Ford F-150 Tremor

The Tremor is one of two off-road focused options for the 2022 F-150, which comes with 4×4 standard (it’s available on other models), with unique off-road front and rear shocks, and 18-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires. This model features the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine, plus it comes with a 2kW Pro Power Onboard system that’s optional on other models. The Tremor comes with an eight-inch infotainment display and a four-inch productivity screen, though the larger displays are available along with the B&O Sound System Unleashed.

The Ford F-150 Raptor

Finally, the Raptor is the ultimate expression of off-road performance and power for the Ford F-150, designed for serious trail enthusiasts. It’s powered by an exclusive 3.5L EcoBoost High-Output V6 engine that provides you with 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. It has next-generation FOX Live Valve shocks, the largest-ever shocks on a factory F-150, designed to handle anything the trail throws at you. It has 17-inch wheels with BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires, heavy-duty skid plates to protect its underside, and unique Raptor detailing all across the exterior.

These touches extend to the interior as well, with unique Raptor all-weather rubber floor mats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with thumb pads, and available Recaro leather and Alcantara suede seating. The Raptor comes with the 12-inch displays, along with advanced safety features. Other options like the B&O Sound System Unleashed and a wireless charging pad are available.
