The Ford Fusion has risen to become a go-to and dependable car in the minds of many Americans since the start of its production back in 2005. It’s a five-passenger mid-size sedan that’s both affordable and surprisingly understated in its style, especially with a lot of modern cars trying to stand out aesthetically from the crowd. Still, it’s pleasant enough to look at, and if you go for one of the hybrid models, you’ll be sure to enjoy the fantastic fuel economy numbers that come with it. It’s no wonder the 2020 Ford Fusion is a popular vehicle at Cincinnati car dealers, including King’s Ford.

At King’s Ford, we’re proud to carry vehicles like the Ford Fusion because we know how reliable they are. The 2020 Ford Fusion is the perfect blend of affordability, technology, and safety. There are powertrain options for gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid, which leaves you with the ideal opportunity to select exactly what you want and need in a car. To better explain what we mean, let’s get into some of the features.

Models and Prices

It’s essential to see the big picture before delving into the little details, so to begin, we’re going to show you the exact options for the different trim levels and their prices.

Your four basic trim levels will be the S ($23,170), SE ($24,500), SEL ($28,690), and Titanium ($34,450). When I say basic, all I mean is that these will be your non-hybrid options among the different models. The hybrid options consist of the Hybrid SE ($28,000), Hybrid SEL ($31,630), Hybrid Titanium ($34,595), and Plug-in Hybrid Titanium ($35,000). Overall, you’ll be able to decide between four gas-powered models, three hybrids, and one plug-in hybrid.

All of your gas-powered models will range in fuel economy from 21-23 MPG in the city and 31-34 MPG on the highway. The SE and SEL models would be the options with better mileage numbers, although they’re all still quite good in general. Although, the really fantastic fuel economy numbers are seen on the hybrid models, of course. Each of the three hybrids will average 43/41 MPG (city/highway), while the Plug-in Hybrid Titanium has an EPA estimated MPG of 109/97 (city/highway). If you’re looking for a car that can go the distance with a lesser side effect on your wallet, the hybrid options would be your best bet.

Engine and Drivetrain Options

You’ll find four different engine options on the 2020 Ford Fusion, starting with the standard 2.5L I-VCT engine on the Fusion S. This engine comes with up to 175 hp and is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. There is also a 1.5L EcoBoost engine with up to 181 hp and a 2.0L EcoBoost engine with up to 245 hp. The electric powertrain is a 2.0L I-VCT Atkinson-cycle hybrid engine and 88 kW electric motor, which will deliver a combined 188 hp.

For a quicker and smoother ride among the gas-powered options, the 2.0L EcoBoost engine, which is standard on the Fusion Titanium, would be a great choice. Add in the available Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, and you’d have a vehicle ready to hit the highway, even in unpleasant weather conditions. The hybrid and plug-in models are only available with FWD, but considering they’re meant to be the ultimate fuel-efficient machines, it makes sense.

How Do Hybrids Work?

Hybrid vehicles have become commonplace around the world, including North America, but that doesn’t mean everyone knows how they work. Without getting into the nitty-gritty, it’s quite simple. Let’s use the 2020 Ford Fusion as an example. Your three hybrid models (Hybrid SE, Hybrid SEL, and Hybrid Titanium) are all equipped with the 2.0L I-VCT Atkinson cycle hybrid engine and electric motor. This means they have a gas-powered engine that works in conjunction with an electric motor for a combined horsepower of 188. So, because there’s an electric motor in there helping out, you can expect a much better fuel efficiency estimate than what you would typically find on any solely gas-powered vehicle out there. Hence the EPA estimated mpg numbers that are above 40 for both city and highway.

With the Plug-in Hybrid Titanium model, it’s a little different. You still have the same engine, but now you have more options with your vehicle. You’ll actually have three different modes, which include gas, electric, and a combination of both gas and electric. In the EV Now mode, which is your full-electric mode, the Plug-in Hybrid Titanium can drive an EPA-estimated 26 miles. Or you can use the Auto EV mode and enjoy the benefits of a system that will automatically switch between using the plug-in power or the gas engine, whenever needed. Using this mode, you can expect up to 610 miles of total driving range.

To charge your plug-in hybrid, you can use either a 240V charger or a 110V charger. The 240v compatible charger can charge your vehicle in 2.5 hours while the 110V charger can do it in 7 hours (overnight recommended).

Safety Features

One of the significant aspects of the 2020 Ford Fusion is that there’s a wide array of standard safety features you’ll find across all models. For example, the Fusion S comes with a blind-spot information system with cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping system, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, auto high beam headlamps, a rearview camera, SOS post-crash alerts, and brake assist. To be honest, there are a lot of vehicles out there that won’t have some of these more advanced safety features as standard options until you reach the higher trim levels, which of course, will cost a lot more money. So, basically, you’d have to pay more money to get access to these features. Fortunately, that’s not the case with the 2020 Ford Fusion.

And, yes, you’ll find these same features on all of the hybrid models as well. You’ll even find a few more standard features among the hybrid models, including Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go and Reverse Sensing System. The hybrid models will generally be more expensive than their solely gas-powered variants. Still, these extra features will be found on the lowest of the hybrid models, the Fusion Hybrid SE, which starts under the $30,000 mark at $28,000 even.

Try One Out Today

The Ford Fusion doesn’t try to be a flashy vehicle or punch above its own weight per se. Instead, it’s here to provide an excellent option for anyone in the mid-size sedan market that might also have an interest in hybrid vehicles. If you’re not interested in hybrid cars, the gas-powered Fusion models will still provide competitive options. If hybrid vehicles do interest you, then you’re in the right place. Fewer trips to the gas station mean more money saved in the long run, plus you’d be doing your part to put your green imprint on the world.
