There has never been a better time to be a fan of pickup trucks designed for going off-road, with more models and incredible new options available than ever before. While the Jeep Gladiator got a lot of attention a couple of years ago, and the Ram 1500 TRX has some impressive specs, the legendary Ford Raptor has returned to take its place as the dominant full-size off-road pickup. Looking at the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor vs 2021 Ram 1500 TRX, it is clear that while the Ram truck has some good things going on, it simply cannot keep up with the incredible all-new features of the Raptor.

For starters, even though these are both trucks with a clear off-road focus, the Ford Raptor has been designed to do its job better. In particular, vital specs like clearance, approach and departure angles, and suspension travel are all in the Raptor’s favor––especially if you choose the exclusive 37-inch tires. It is clear that the Raptor's engine is very impressive, and its transmission leaves the Ram TRX in its wake. Ram has long bragged about having superior luxury and interior features to other trucks, but with 12-inch infotainment and driver displays standard, the Ford Raptor proves that it can do anything the Ram can do, and then some.

We are particularly excited to see the bold new tech features and options coming with the Ford Raptor. Things like over-the-air updates for the SYNC 4 system, an available 2.0kW power supply, and 1-Pedal Trail driving will make the Raptor easy to own, update, and take everywhere you want to go. While additional features like four-mode exhaust and even a Trail Control system – like cruise control for off-road – are simply beyond anything the Ram 1500 TRX has to offer. • Performance

A red 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor is off-roading on dirt after winning the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor vs 2021 Ram 1500 TRX comparison.

Even though the Ford Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX are clearly designed with an off-road focus, you still want to consider how well they drive and function overall. Since you will probably use one to get around town and do other things, it is important that you have a truck that drives well and is fun to own. And while the Ram 1500 TRX is certainly a fine pickup, the Raptor builds on the legendary performance and capability of the Ford F-150.

    The Ram 1500 TRX

Looking at how they drive, the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX features a 6.2L Supercharged HEMI V8 engine that delivers up to 702 hp and up to 650 lb-ft of torque. It is a great engine, to be sure, and one of the main reasons a lot of people are interested in this truck––since you cannot get this particular engine on any other Ram 1500 model. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a high-performance exhaust.

    The Ford F-150 Raptor

The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor, however, goes the extra mile in some very important ways. While we do not have all of the specs yet for the Raptor, we know it features a specially-tuned High Output 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine that is twin-turbocharged, though Ford has not yet released horsepower or torque specs for it. It will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission for a very smooth drive, with a four-mode exhaust system, which lets you choose between Normal, Sport, and Baja settings for sound quality, plus a Quiet setting to keep your neighbors happy. Also, we know a Raptor R version is coming that will have an incredibly powerful engine specifically designed to best the TRX’s HEMI.

  • Off-Road Capability

    Off-Road Systems

Even though these are both fine trucks overall, when you are looking at the Ram 1500 TRX or Ford Raptor, what you really want to see is its off-road performance. This is so important, in fact, that we will look at it in two different sections. Here we will look at some of the overall off-road systems for these two trucks and what they offer on the trail.

    The Ram 1500 TRX

The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX certainly has some good stuff going for it, but you will see that the Ford Raptor has simply leaped ahead to the next level. As you would expect, the Ram 1500 TRX has four-wheel drive, with a coil spring suspension that includes Bilstein shocks in the front and rear to provide as smooth a ride as possible even in rough terrain. It has performance-tuned software that lets you choose from eight different drive modes to match whatever you encounter on the trail, including a Rock mode and a Mud/Sand mode.

    The Ford F-150 Raptor

As nice as those off-road features are, however, the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor represents the cutting edge of off-road technology. It has four-wheel drive, of course, with high-output, gas-pressurized, FOX Racing Shox shock absorbers that are simply amazing and offer an unbeatable trail-driving experience. You also get a Terrain Management system, which lets you choose between seven different modes, including Slippery, Off-Road, Baja, and Rock Crawl.

Where the Raptor really takes things to the next level, however, is with incredible new off-road features like its Trail Control system. This is essentially cruise control for off-road, letting you set a speed, and the truck will keep you going at that speed while you focus on steering and adapting to the trail. There is also a new 1-Pedal Drive system that lets you use a single pedal at low speeds for both throttle and braking, making it ideal for rock crawling.

    Clearance and Angles

As you consider the 2021 Ford Raptor and the Ram 1500 TRX, you are certainly going to be concerned with their ability to go off-road. Since there is a lot to look at, we will compare these trucks in two different sections. Here, we will consider their wheels, ground clearance, and angles for handling rough terrain and objects on the trail.

    The Ram 1500 TRX

The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX has available 18-inch beadlock-capable wheels, which means the tires can be locked on so you can slightly deflate them without the risk of them coming off. Onto these wheels, you can get 35-inch Goodyear, Wrangler Territory All-Terrain tires that offer great performance and control on the toughest terrain. The Ram TRX has a ground clearance of up to 11.8 inches; as well as an approach angle of 30.2 degrees, departure angle of 23.5 degrees, and breakover angle of 21.9 degrees. These numbers are good, but the Ford Raptor can do better across the board.

    The Ford F-150 Raptor

With the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor, you can get 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, perfect for going off-road. Although 35-inch tires are standard, you can get 37-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires made exclusively for the Ford Raptor, offering superior clearance and angles when on the trail. Even with the 35-inch tires, the numbers are better for the Raptor, but the 37-inch tires really dominate the trail. With the 37-inch tires, the Raptor gets 13.1 inches of ground clearance, as well as an approach angle of 33.1 degrees, a departure angle of 24.9 degrees, and a breakover angle of 24.4 degrees. That means that when you are dealing with rocks, fallen trees, and logs, or any other obstacles on the trail, the Ford Raptor can clear them more easily than the Ram TRX.

  • Interior

    The Ram 1500 TRX

For some time now, the Ram 1500 has been a dominant presence in the marketplace, in part due to its impressive interior features. The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX has a very nice interior, including large infotainment and driver displays, with an available head-up display, and an available Harman Kardon premium sound system. With a flat-bottom steering wheel and luxurious details throughout the interior, there is no denying that the TRX does a lot of things right.

    The Ford F-150 Raptor

The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor, however, does just as much or more in every possible way. With the Raptor, you get a 12-inch Infotainment display and a 12-inch driver information display standard, as well as adaptive cruise control and a keyless entry pad. The all-new Ford Raptor can get over-the-air updates to its software, letting you take advantage of the latest features and great functionality for years to come.

Available features for the Raptor take it even further, including a 2.0kW Pro Power Onboard option that lets you use your truck as a portable generator for a wide range of devices, which is perfect on the trail. You can also get a stunning Bang & Olufsen sound system and an available 360-degree camera package to give you a better view around your truck. With more features and options still to be announced, the Raptor truly is the new king of the off-road pickup.
