The midsize SUV market is a highly competitive one, with models available from pretty much every major manufacturer. This should be no surprise, however, since midsize SUVs are incredibly popular, offering great functionality and interior space without taking over your life the way a large model can. Choosing the right one can be tricky, which is why it often helps to narrow down your focus and compare two models to see how they stack up. Consider the 2020 Ford Edge vs 2020 Nissan Murano, for example, and everything they have to offer.
Although these are both midsize SUVs, the 2020 Ford Edge gives you significantly more interior cargo and passenger space. There is a single engine available on the 2020 Nissan Murano, which is fine, but it is barely a match for one of the two engines offered on the 2020 Ford Edge, and truly blown away by the Edge’s more powerful option. While you might not think engine power is the most important feature of a midsize SUV, it directly impacts just how fun these vehicles are to drive – making the 2020 Edge potentially much more responsive and enjoyable.
In terms of interior features, you can get some great options on both of these, but overall, the 2020 Ford Edge comes out on top again. And while these are both very safe vehicles, with exceptional standard and available safety features, the 2020 Nissan Murano falls short compared to the standard safety features of the Ford Edge. In general, the 2020 Ford Edge truly lives up to its name and edges out the competition in pretty much every conceivable way. But let's take a more in-depth look into how these two SUVs compare.
It can be easy to think that the engine is only significant when looking at something like a powerful pickup truck or a sports car. In reality, however, the engine in any vehicle is critical because it impacts your overall driving experience. With two great engines available, the 2020 Ford Edge blows the Nissan Murano out of the water.
The 2020 Ford Edge has two engines to choose from, starting with a 2.0L EcoBoost turbocharged engine that offers up to 250 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. The available 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine, however, is the real star, delivering up to 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque for an incredible driving experience. Both engines come paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission; front-wheel drive is standard on the 2.0L engine with all-wheel drive available, and AWD is standard on the more powerful engine.
By comparison, the 2020 Nissan Murano has only one engine on offer, so let us start with it. The Murano features a 3.5L DOHC V6 engine that provides up to 260 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. That is a very nice engine for a midsize SUV, to be entirely fair, and can offer a pretty good overall driving experience. It comes paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission, which some people like, but others do not. While it has front-wheel drive standard, intelligent all-wheel drive is available for every trim. Overall, you can get more power from the Edge.
With any SUV, you want to get lots of room inside that you can utilize for passengers and cargo. Half the fun of owning an SUV, after all, is how functional it is and the ability to load up with everything you need. A midsize SUV should provide you with plenty of interior space for friends, family, and all your stuff, but the 2020 Nissan Murano falls short.
The 2020 Ford Edge gives you tons of space inside for both your passengers and your cargo. You get up to nearly 114 cu.ft. of total passenger volume inside the Edge. The Edge also gives you almost 40 cu.ft. of interior space behind the rear seats or more than 73 cu.ft. of cargo room with the rear seats down.
Oddly enough, the Nissan Murano is slightly larger, overall, than the 2020 Ford Edge. The Murano measures about 192 inches in overall length and 74 inches in width. By comparison, the 2020 Ford Edge is about 188 inches in length and 75 inches in width. And yet, the 2020 Nissan Murano has, at most, about 108 cu.ft. of total passenger volume inside – and that is without the moonroof; models with a moonroof have slightly less interior space. For cargo, the Murano offers up to 32 cu.ft. of space inside behind the front seats, or up to 67 cu.ft. of space if the rear seat is down. So, you can see, although these are both midsize SUVs, and the Nissan Murano is slightly longer, the 2020 Ford Edge gives you significantly more interior room.
Both the 2020 Ford Edge and the 2020 Nissan Murano have numerous trims for you to choose from and some great features available inside in terms of technology and comfort.
If we look at the Ford Edge Titanium, one of its highest trims, you get 10-way power-adjustable, heated front seats with a driver’s seat memory feature, blue ambient lighting, and a wireless charging pad. The Titanium also has a 12-speaker B&O sound system, a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel with mounted controls, and a remote start. Other features like an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone automatic temperature control, and an 8-inch infotainment display are standard on the Titanium and lower trims.
The 2020 Nissan Murano Platinum, which is its highest trim, features a 10-way driver’s seat, only a 4-way power front passenger seat, and lacks a wireless charging pad. It has a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted controls, an 8-inch infotainment display, and an 11-speaker Bose premium audio system. An auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone temperature control, and interior ambient lighting are standard on the Platinum and available on some lower trims. Overall, both of these SUVs have great features inside, but the 2020 Ford Edge can give you more, with a more adjustable front passenger seat, more speakers on the highest trim, and an available wireless charging pad.
Both the 2020 Ford Edge and 2020 Nissan Murano are very safe vehicles. Ford and Nissan make sure to put safety first for their drivers. Let's take a look at what each vehicle has to offer.
The 2020 Ford Edge has the Ford Co-Pilot360 package standard on every model. This includes pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system. Auto high-beam headlamps and a rearview camera are also included in this as standard on every model. Other available safety features include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centering, evasive steering assist, and enhanced active park assist.
The standard safety features on the 2020 Nissan Murano include an intelligent forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and a rearview monitor. Other great safety features, like pedestrian detection for the automatic emergency braking, intelligent lane intervention, a blind spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert, are part of an optional package for the starting trim. With all of the available options, it is clear that Nissan made safety a priority. However, you get more standard features in the 2020 Ford Edge, making it the better choice.
