The mid-sized sedan is often considered the standard type of car. While other vehicles focus on utility, performance, fuel economy, and sheer power, the sedan form is designed to bridge the gap between all of these automotive areas. While the sedan may not particularly excel in any one of these automotive areas, a great sedan will find a way to do a little bit of everything. Great for the daily commuter or the modest driver, sedans certainly have their place in the market. With this said, no two vehicles exude what it means to be an excellent sedan quite as much as the 2019 Ford Fusion vs 2019 Toyota Camry. These are two mid-sized sedans that certainly excel in all of these areas and do a decent job at appealing to a broad audience. That said, many of our customers who visit our dealership ask us, 'which is superior?' At Kings Ford, we aren't afraid of a bit of healthy competition. We are here to showcase the differences between these two sedans and let you decide which is the superior vehicle.

  • Performance

A red 2019 Ford Fusion, which wins when comparing the 2019 Ford Fusion vs 2019 Toyota Camry, is driving on a bridge near Cincinnati, OH.

    2019 Ford Fusion

When you visit our Ford dealership, you'll likely find five different trim options to choose from when looking at the 2019 Ford Fusion. The S, SE, SEL, Titanium, and V6 Sport. Beneath the hood of the S trim, Ford Fusion drivers will find a punchy 2.5-liter inline-4 engine which provides drivers with 175 horsepower to play with. While this may seem like a small start, things hardly stop there. Move up to the SE and SEL trim options, where you'll find that you can choose from a front-wheel drive or an all-wheel-drive drivetrain. If you decide the front-wheel-drive Fusion, you'll get a 181 horsepower 1.5-liter turbo-4 engine. But if you want more power and need something for those bad winters; you can get the Fusion with all-wheel-drive that has a 245 horsepower, 2.0-liter I-4 engine. Although, if you're looking for truly remarkable performance, we'd recommend opting for the 2.7-liter V-6 twin-turbo engine found in the V-6 turbo. This high performing engine puts out a breathtaking 325 horsepower and 380 lb-ft worth of torque. As a result, getting behind the wheel of the V-6 Sport trim makes for a drive more closely related to a luxury performance vehicle.

The 2019 Ford Fusion can come optional with an AWD drivetrain, and more importantly, can be found on the high-performing V-6 turbo trim. 19-inch-wheels support the weight of the Ford Fusion, and due to the low profile, even at high speeds, the Ford Fusion hugs the road with simplistic ease. Fuel economy in the Ford Fusion isn't half bad either, with base models getting 25 mpg combined.

    2019 Toyota Camry

The 2019 Toyota Camry comes with a similar array of trim options to choose from including the L, LE, SE, XSE, and XLE. This variety of configuration allows you to pick and choose what kind of sedan driving experience that you'd like to take part in. The Toyota Camry starts remarkably stable, with a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine that roars out 203 horsepower with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Like the Ford Fusion, you can upgrade that engine; however, the actual performance of these upgrades can seem questionable compared to what's offered by the 2019 Ford Fusion.

In higher trims, the Toyota Camry you can invest in a little more robust 3.5-liter V-6 engine, which thrums out an impressive 301 horsepower. While quick to the jump, this engine horsepower isn't nearly as extensive as what's found in the top trim of the 2019 Ford Fusion. Unfortunately, the V-6 option comes with the standard Front-Wheel Drive drivetrain, which can truly dampen performance. While the Toyota Camry has a pretty solid traction-control system, its nothing compared to an All-Wheel Drive vehicle. So, if you're driving the V-6 model on wet roads, we recommend using the utmost caution lest you find those front wheels slipping on the pavement. Fuel economy isn't too bad on the Toyota Camry either, with base models getting a combined 34 miles per gallon.

  • Interior

    2019 Ford Fusion

Sedans are never meant to be particularly roomy, but the 2019 Ford Fusion does a decent job at providing space and comfort for all occupants aboard, drivers and passengers alike. Just under 192 inches long, the Ford Fusion is certainly large enough, and the 16-cubic-foot trunk is pretty sizeable all things considered. Moving inside, drivers will find comfortable front seats with lumbar adjustments on all models. Base model upholstery starts basic with cloth being fastened throughout the front and rear seating. Upgrade to the Titanium and Sport trims though, and you'll find real premium-feeling leather. Rear passengers will get to enjoy 38.3 inches of legroom, and 37.8 inches of headroom, so even when filled to capacity, all passengers will enjoy plenty of space.

While interior surfaces, legroom, and seating all play a huge role in the quality of an interior, we'd be crazy if we didn't cover the tech built into the Ford Fusion. Auto tech starts small in the Ford Fusion, with base models getting only a 4.2-inch infotainment screen. Upgrade this base model though, and you'll find additional bells and whistles that put the Ford Fusion in line with a near-luxury vehicle. Features like automatic climate control, a sprawling infotainment system, power-adjustable front seats, a Sony designed audio system, and a power moon roof. You can also upgrade that small 4.2 infotainment screen for an 8 inches screen, bringing these higher trim Ford Fusions to some pretty incredible heights.

    2019 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry falls a little short in terms of interior comforts but still manages to provide a ride that sets it a range higher above lesser competitors. The 2019 Toyota Camry offers up only 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space. The interior of the base model can seem pretty abysmal at first glance. All hard plastic and rough cloth upholstery, this is an area where Toyota fell a little short. If you move up to higher trims and spend a bit more money, you'll be given a more robust package. For instance, if you upgrade to the SE trim, you'll find synthetic leather dressing the seats. And if you really desire to have the real thing, you can step up to the XLE and XSE which is upholstered with authentic leather. Rear passengers will find plenty of legroom, and a pretty well-designed seat, however, taller passengers will find themselves ducking away from the ceiling most of the time.

Fortunately, the 2019 Toyota Camry makes up for its lack of interior comforts by adding plenty of auto tech. Base models come with a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen that is Apple CarPlay compatible, and yes, Toyota has excluded Android Auto for some reason. But additional bells and whistles like power features, and Bluetooth connectivity make up for their exclusionary infotainment software. If you spend a bit more cash and upgrade to higher trims, you'll find additional features like keyless ignition, a bigger infotainment screen, a near-futuristic heads up display, dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated seating.

  • Safety

    2019 Ford Fusion

Ford has taken things up a notch in terms of safety with the 2019 Ford Fusion. While other sedans are asking for drivers to pay more to take advantage of active safety, Ford is including a number of these features as standard. Features like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, automatic high-beams, and blind-spot monitors are included on every model of the Ford Fusion. And if you want a bit more, don't worry, you can add adaptive cruise control in an optional navigations package.

    2019 Toyota Camry

The 2019 Toyota Camry offers a similar level of comprehensive safety, although it misses some features that are included in the 2019 Ford Fusion. No matter what model of the Toyota Camry you buy, you can expect to find adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and active lane control. However, you'll have to pay a fair amount more if you want add-ons like blind-spot monitors, cross-traffic alerts, and the incredible surround-view camera.
